Larnach Castle

The Castle was built in 1871 by William Larnach, a politician and banker, and is currently owned by the Barker family. Its architecture is a showcase of beautiful carpentry, wood carvings, plaster mouldings, and a unique "hanging" staircase. If your interest is New Zealand antiques, you must stop here for a while. Tours of the castle are self–guided and well worth the entrance fee.

The gardens around the castle are an absolute delight and well worth exploring. Look out for signs of Alice in Wonderland! Climb to the top of the castle tower to reach the ultimate Peninsula look–out point, probably the best view you'll ever get of Cone Mountain.
